siege's little page

top

Because I've got some time-- and a little too much coffee in me-- I've decided to put together a little page of my own. There's really not a lot here, but lack of real content has never stopped anyone else from putting up a page, so why should it bother me?

brief personal stuff

top

I've been married since April of 2003, and have been a father since October of 2004. My wife works for the insectory of a large chemical company, and my daughter works in her couch fort in the living-room.

I like to poke around with computers (obviously). I prefer a keyboard over a soldering-iron. I'm not into following "the latest and greatest" in mainboard chipsets and doing hardware optimizations, &c. When I play video games, they are usually on a dedicated console. My laptop, workstation and desktops-gone-servers boot to linux (with the exception of the terminal server). I suppose I would fit under the category "hobbyist" more than anything else. I am reasonably familiar with the concept of computing as a science, and the philosophy and practical applications there-of. I am most fluent in C, Java, and Python (and getting the three to run together), but can mess around in scheme a little, and have even poked at OpenCyc once or twice. I suppose I'm capable of working with any given language, if provided a manual and a requirement.

I like to build stuff, like book-shelves and desks and bar-stools and keg-nooks. My wife and I own our house, so I get a lot of chances to whip out some tools and mess around with stuff like that. At some point I'll post pictures of my endeavors to flickr.

Honestly I'm pretty dull. I am annoyed when people cannot say "etcetera" (eg: "ekt-SET-rah") or "specifically" (eg: "pa-CI-fik-uh-lee"), and by people who chew with their mouth open. I don't update my livejournal very often, and my del.icio.us links probably aren't interesting to anybody else at all.

what i do

top

I'm currently holding down two jobs. On the weekdays I pull a nine-to-five contracting to IBM doing development and trivial admin activities for a well-funded internal project. When the weekend rolls around, I can be found at the Rialto doing all the stuff that one would normally associate with an independant, single-screen, mostly restored movie-theater.

I have a public pet project (which I have been neglecting recently due to a vague lack of interest) entitled Jamud. I also run the Meanwhile project (reimplementation of the Lotus Sametime client protocol, with a Gaim plugin). I've contributed some very small bits of work to a couple (eg: two or three) other open-source projects. I enjoy writing code, and I like to debug-- I simply haven't found many projects I'd like to work on.

I like to read, and my collection of books is quite large. However I read as an escape (mostly Fantasy, some Sci-Fi), so many would argue that this is no better than watching television or playing video games. I enjoy Terry Pratchett, Robert Jordan, Neil Stephenson, etc. Same-old, same-old.
